TWO x TWO
SPACE IN SPACE
Without gravity, human beings would never have came into existence. Human beings evolved their culture with the influence of gravity. People across the globe have raised and cultivated their cultures based on geographic locations like the Greeks, Romans, Yangzhou, Egyptians, and Indus. As cultures evolve, they eventually collide, and their traditions fade into history. New Space is a byproduct of emerging socioeconomic infrastructures created by an evolving culture. There is an impending fact that humans will likely expand their civilization to outer space. Like history, the same questions arise for future space exploration. How will people live in space and colonize in a zero gravity environment? Currently, we are at the starting point of this new culture. How we shape and envision life in space now, will be the foundation for the New Space culture.
So, what would this culture look like? How people interact in it? What concerns do we need to address? Without gravity, we wouldn't be able to sleep on a bed, sit down in a chair, put items on a table or cook in a pan. How would we live without gravity? What will sleeping look like? How will we cook? The nature of fire and water is different in zero gravity. Fire burns in a perfect spear, water floats like a bubble.
Future missions, like the Mars 2020 mission, will begin to transform our current society into an interplanetary society. This short-term habitation in space will inevitably begin to build an interplanetary society starting now and far into the future with the potential to become long term, or even a lifelong, habitation. Rather than pushing humans into space as a scientific, military, or political mission, what can we expect space travel to be like for the normal human being? What is the best way to transition from daily life on earth to daily life in space?
These are the key features that I set up to create a rough forecast of how I imagine the future.
• A zero gravity landscape for a human habitat needs to satisfy most basic human needs.
• The habitat needs to offer a customizable environment to fit and be manipulated by individuals.
• The habitat needs to provoke human intelligence to work with the surrounding environment like zero gravity and limitations of space.
• The habitat has a different extended viewpoint of an earth culture. They adapt themselves into space or control the surroundings with human intelligence.
I expect humans will still need furniture to live comfortably. Not just the traditional aesthetic furniture that we use today, but there will be an emphasis for objects to help our living condition. Furthermore, the furniture people use in space will be interactive with either their environment or clothing. The furniture can transform into our clothing or perhaps even into the environment itself.
Food culture will transform to work with zero gravity. Cooking tools will change their shapes to more sphere like shapes in order to effectively utilize the energy provided from a sphere shaped fire. Cooking methods will also change for the type of fire needed. Boiling steaming, smoking, and frying will become the main method of cooking due to lack of gravity for grilling ingredients. In order to provide while comfort eating a meal, our body can take on the huge role as a temporary surface to eat from, rather than a table in zero gravity.
Even the culture they are projecting into space has a dominant Western influence. What will cultures in Asia, the Middle East, or Africa look like? What cultural features will they bring into space? For the most part, each culture has differing backgrounds. When they expand themselves into space, how will they start their new culture from the ground up? What factors does each culture think are valuable enough to pass onto the new culture?
As the process this research, I provide booklet with scenarios of main issues people may have trouble such as cultural differences, cooking, limitation of space, de-orientation and usage of multi-surfaces. From view point of current two distinct superpower nations, I could speculate of the space culture originated from different Earth culture.
